Notes |
- The 1920 census reports that she and her father were born in New Orleans and her mother in Cuba. This should be questioned.
Rita's great granddaughter, Paula Danner, reports that family lore identified Rita as an Ojibwa; this should be questioned, since Rita was born in New Orleans, not Wisconsin.
Family Lore: the following was written by Gloria Margarita Dugas, who was reporting family lore about her grandparents. Nearly every statement is wrong. It is a prime example of why people researching family history need to verify family stories.
«i»RITA DUGAS NEE FAURIA
Born 1882 and died in 1965.
Rita was born in Louisiana as a Princess of the Ojebwa Indian Tribe. Her father said he tradedher to Octavio Dugas for 6 horses. They used to laugh about how this came about. Octavio Dugas was born in Havanna, Cuba, the son of a cigar maker. Rita liked to smoke her corncob pipe but when she heard her mother coming she wold hide under the bed.
On there journey to Wisconsin they stopped in New York and then migrated to Wisconsin. He had the first band in Wisconsin being a violinist. His main job was being a Havanna Cigar Maker. He worked out of his home at 1224 W. Galena St. in Milwaukee Wi. Hearsay has it that he was a real casanova with the ladies. They had 13 children - 12 boys and 1 girl.
They originated in Spain during the Spanish American War. They were ship builders and as soon as the boats were built the Spainish Army would confescate the, except for the last ship which they used to flee from there country and came to the new world.
They finally settled in the midwest and there children all grew up doing what they wanted to do. Three of them were Postal Workers, two of them were in the hardward business, one was a Las Vegas dancer.«/i» [7, 12]

19 Apr 1900 |
New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana, USA [13, 15] |
- Witnesses to the marriage ceremony were Fred V. Fauria, Laura Blanchard, and G. S. Wyndham.
According to the 1920 and 1930 censuses, Octave and Rita's eldest son (Lester) was born in New Orleans about 1902. Their second son (George) was born in New York about 1903; their third son (Octave) was born in Florida about 1906; their fourth son (William) was born in Canada about 1909) and the subsequent children (from 1912 onward) were born in Wisconsin, where they apparently finally settled.
The 1900 census indicates they have been married for 2 years, which cannot be correct. [4, 7, 13, 14]
