Newspaper article, The Seattle (Washington) Daily Times, 7 Apr 1958, page 10
      «b»Mission Reopened
      «/b»By Associated Press.
JESUIT BEND, La., April 7 -- A white priest conducted services yesterday at St. Cecilia's Catholic Mission, closed for more than two years because some members had objected to a Negro priest.
The Rev. Frank Ecimovich said Mass for about 55 whites and Negroes when the chapel's doors were opened yesterday, for the first time since October 2, 1955.
The Most Rev. Joseph F. Rummel, archbishop, who closed the mission, 20 miles south of New Orleans, had said it would not be reopened until the parishioner agreed to accept any priest he sent.
      «b» Prelate Yields«/b»
In authorizing its opening again, however, Archbishop Rummel said, "We cannot permit the closed chapel to stand forever as a symbol of resistance to the authority of the church."
At the Easter services, white persons sat on one side, Negroes on the other.
Benoit Barrois, 70-year-old retired farmer, said he had not attended church since the mission closed. "I didn't have any way to go to another church," he explained.
Barrois said that he refused to stay at the mission because the Rev. Gerald Lewis, a Negro, had been assigned as an assistant priest.
"And I would walk out again if they sent another Negro here to say Mass," Barrois added.
A brother, John E. Barrois, 74, said he was glad to see the mission reopened. "I was born in this community. I went to the old church before it was blown down by the hurricane in 1915. the I sent to this chapel, when it was built to replace the old building."
      «b» Negro Comments
«/b» Oliver Dobard, 75-year-old Negro, stood outside after the services. His white hair glistened in the hot sun.
"I was born over there near the river. I made my Comminuion in the old church and attended every Mass I could here until the chapel was closed a couple years back," Dobard said. "But I've missed it a lot since then. Glad it's open."
Father Ecimovich, pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish at Belle Chasse, about ten miles distant, has jurisdiction over the mission. ###
