    Notes
    • In the 1860 census, 12-year-old William is living with his family in a house shared by 19 people. The head of household is A. Edmonson, age 63, a master mechanic & wheelwright from North Carolina. Also in the household are G. S. Harris (age 21, a printer born in Louisiana) and James Ware (age 19, an apprentice printer born in Mississippi). Given William's future occupation as a pressman, this may be significant.

In August 1870, William Bennet [sic] (22, a printer); his wife Mattie [Lowe] Bennet (18); and their daughter Mary Louisa Bennet (6 mos.), all born in Mississippi, were living in a household headed by David B Lowe (61, a carpenter, born New Jersey); Martha A Lowe (49, born North Carolina, presumably his wife); daughters Isabella Lowe (25); Frances Lowe (23); Mary Lowe (20); Ella Lowe (12); and son David A Lowe (9), all born in Mississippi.

The household also included eight men: Columbus Birdsong (30, merchant, born Alabama); Frank Rembert (17, born Ms); James Stewart (60, painter, born Ms); Theodore Theild (36, born Ms); George Ross (60, carpenter, born N Carolina); E. G. Frisby (28, carpenter, born Ms); P Mclaughlin (40, carpenter, born Ms). All of the above were white. The 1870 census does not indicate the relationship of the members of the household. There were also two black domestic servants: Benj Norman (12, born Ms) and Fanny Hester (25, born Ms) and (presumably) Fanny's daughter, Cornelia Hester (10 mos., born Ms.)

In the 7 June 1880 census in New Orleans, WW is identified as a 33-year-old widower with a 6-year-old son, Walter. Both are identified as mulatto. WW's occupation is pressman. He is suffering from consumption. (Walter's mother, Rebecca Culberson, had died of consumption the previous January.) WW's place of birth is given as Florida; this may have been an attempt to disassociate himself from his Mississippi family to protect them from the shadow of his second family.

In the 16 June 1880 census in Madison County, Mississippi, recorded nine days later, the household contains WW, wife Mattie, daughters Louisa and Mattie, and a black servant, 65-year-old Missie Williams, occupation cook who cannot read nor write. She and her parents were born in Mississippi.

It is impossible to know whether WW was physically counted in both places nine days apart or if Mattie or the widow had the enumerator include him in her respective household because of his sometimes presence. He was likely dubbed as mulatto in the NOLA report simply because his mulatto son was living with two other mulattos. In his absence, the enumerator may have simply assumed him to be mulatto. In all of the records, it is the only time he is ID'd as anything but white.

Mattie may or may not have known about Walter. In 1882, WW moved to New Orleans. Mattie & the girls moved to NOLA as well, but I don't know when, or if they moved together. Because the 1890 census was destroyed, we can't be sure if they were living in the same household, but in an 1892 NOLA City Directory WW and Mattie share the same address; Mathilda "Mattie" is listed as working as a confectioner.

I do not believe Walter lived with WW & Mattie. There is a somewhat mysterious woman name Hattie Faulkner with whom Walter lives as an young adult. He is ID'd as her ward in the 1900 census at age 25. He lives with her until he marries in 1906, and she apparently then lives with him and his wife, Francesca Fauria. He died in 1910. When Harriet died in 1911, her obit ID'd her as Francesca's mother-in-law. When Walter was given into her care is unknown, and her relationship to the family is unknown. She is also the guardian of Walter's half-siblings, William and Ida Porter, other children of Rebecca Culberson. There is lots yets to be discovered here. [5, 14]
