Notes |
- Melissa Rose Colar: «i»I believe that Eugene Henry Barbre was the descendant of French Heugonots that imigrated to the United States in the 18th century.
«/i»Per the 1900 census, Eugene H. Barbre (misspelled Barbrey) was enumerated as the white, single, head of household. In a perfect census report, the members of the household are reported with their relationships to the head of the household. Alice Williams is listed as his married black housekeeper. It reports that she has been married one year.
All six of Alice's children are living with them and carry the surname Williams, yet their relationships are noted as son or daughter, indicating that Eugene was their father. Ardenia Williams (Black), who one might be expect to be Alice's mother, is reported as Eugene's mother. It may be that the enumerator made the son/daughter relationship relative to their mother, Alice, or it may be that Eugene acknowledged the children. The fact that Ardenia Williams (Black) is reported at "Mother" makes the latter the more likely possibility. In short, paternity of the children is unclear.
These relationships need to be researched further. [3, 6]
