An Accident Which Resulted in the Death of a Colored Boy.
«/b» Pensacola, Fla., Aug. 31.---Jesse Stringer, a colored youth, was accidentally shot and killed in the Southern Express Company's office here at a late hour last night by Mr. Vincent Fauria, the messenger running between here and Flomaton. The colored driver of the express wagon had sprained his wrist, and temporarily employed Stringer to assist him in handling freight. When all the freight for the northbound train had been placed in the wagon last night and they were ready to go to the depot, Mr. Fauria picked up the Winchester shotgun, which he is required to carry on the run, and opened the chamber to see if the cartidge of buckshot was in position. While doing so he was gayly talking with the negro boy, Stringer, who was standing a few feet in front of him. He raised the gun to close the chamber, and there was a sudden explosion. Stringer fell to the floor, his brains oozing through a ghastly wound. Nearly the whole of his scalp was torn off by the load of buckshot. He was unconscious, but lived nearly three hours afterward.
Mr. Fauria was overcome with grief at the accident, and immediately went to the county jail and surrendered. Coroner Jones was summoned, and after hearing evidence of the night clerk and the colored driver, the only ones who saw the accident, he discharged Mr. Fauria. Mr. Fauria had the remains of the unfortunate youth decently interred to-day. ### [12]
