    • Octavia Tenette recalls that Jeannine was the sister of Emilie CHALIGNY TENETTE, who was Bertha's mother. This follows a practice of the time, when children were reared by extended family when a parent died or was unable to provide care.
      (Ed. note: Delphinia VENET (sp?) is reported in the Bossier household as Oliver's mother-in-law, which indicated that Jeannine's maiden name was NOT Chaligny.)

    • According to the Tenette Family History, Bertha's mother died when she was three months old and her father died while she was still quite young. She was reared by her godmother, Jeanne Vinet Bossier Bernard, a niece of her mother's. She spent her teen years in Tuskegee, Alabama, with her brother Louis, where she attended Tuskegee Institute High School. She vividly remembered Booker T. Washington and George Washington Carver, both of whom were teachers at the Tuskegee Institute. [16]
