«b»VIOLATED LAWS RELATIVE TO LOTTERY.
In Criminal Court Policeman Ranson Undergoes Strenuous Examination.«/b»
Paul Dobad of 1516 Spain street, was found guilty of violating the state law relative to keeping a lottery shop by Judge Aucoin, of the Second City Criminal Court this afternoon. The evidence was that Dobard had sold a ticket to a boy named Charles Thomas, of 1113 Spain street.
Patrolman Ranson made the affidavit from the information he had received from the Thomas boy. He said he went to the house of Dobard in Spain street and found the occupant out. He searched the house.
He was put under a severe cross-examination by former Judge Richard Otero. Among other things Ranson was asked what business he had been engaged in prior to becoming a member of the police force. Ranson admitted that he was in the lottery business.
"Could you swear that Mr. Dobard used his house as a lottery shop on the date complained of in this affidavit?" asked the attorney.
"I could not. I went there on the information given me by the boy."
"Did you not act in collusion with this boy and promise to divide the reward with him?" asked Mr. Otero.
Ranson said he did not. He simply met the boy at the corner of Dobard's house and accompanied him to the place where he bought the ticket.
"Was that the only lottery office in your district?" asked Mr. Otero.
"I found two that day. That was all I am aware of," was the reply.
"Who wrote this ticket?" asked the attorney.
"I don't know. The boy said Dobard had written it."
Charles Thomas, the boy who bought the ticket was next called. He said he went to Dobard's house and bought the ticket in the second room. He played 4-11-44[? number unclear] gig and saddle. He said that Dobard also gave him a list for the drawing on the previous day. He swore that Dobard wrote out the ticket and that he paid ten cents for it.
Miss Dobard, the daughter of the accused man, was called to testify in her father's behalf. She said the boy did not buy a ticket in her house that day or any other day. Her father was absent from home.
Dobard took the stand in his own behalf and swore that the boy did not buy a ticket from him that day.
The court found Dobard guilty and fixed next Friday for sentence. ###
