«b»A Horrible Death
Accidently Dealt Out to Edward Gschwind Yesterday«/b»
«b»By the Explosion of a Piece of Machinery He Attempted to Repair«/b»
An unusual explosion, attended with fatal results, took place at 8:15 o'clock yesterday morning at the iron works of Messrs. Edward Gschwind and Joseph K. Boland, on Lafayette street, between South Peters and Tchoupitoulas streets, wherein Mrs. Gschwind was struck in the stomach by a piece of iron and almost instantly killed.
The accident was due to vapor steam forming in the hollow of the "follower head," and as there was no avenue for it to excape an explosion was the result.
The follower head is a circular-shaped piece of machinery belonging to an engine and forming a round box into which the piston rod tightly fits.
The engine to which the follower head belonged has been lying in the firm's shops for some time past, and Mr. Gschwind finally concluded to give it a general overhauling, and then dispose of it.
Mr. Gschwind, who had the reputation of being a first class machinist, reached the shops rather early yesterday morning and after attending to some work about the place started to repair the engine. A fire was started in the forge, a short distance from the engine, and Mr. Gschwind, assisted by Paul Dobard, another machinist, residing corner of Decatur and Hospital streets, removed the follower head and piston rod from the engine and placed it in the fire. After doing so, Mr. Gschwind remarked to his assistant, "Go and get a block and place it under the head, and you need not remain here to hold it." Dobard complied with the instructions and then went to attend some work near the engine.
The follower head was placed in the fire to be heated, so Mr. Gschwind could remove the rings, and then remove the piston rod. The follower head was damp and hollow, and when in the fire but a short while vapor steam accummulated inside, and as it could not escape it exploded.
The pistol rod was hurled in one direction while the follwer head darted forward and struck Mr. Gschwind, who was standing directly in front of the forge, in the stomach. The blow was a terrible one, and almost disemboweled him, and he fell to the ground. The man Dobard was struck in the face by flying embers of coal, and on realizing what had taken place rushed to Mr. Gschwind and found him with his clothing torn and saturated with blood.
The injured man remarked "Have mercy on a poor man," and when Dobard discovered that his employer was seriously injured he picked him up and carried him across the street to the stables of the Chalmette laundry, where he was given every attention.
The ambulance was called, but ere it reached the place the man expired and the body was then removed to the morgue in the patron wagon.
Dobard had a narrow escape himself but the injury he received in the face was not severe. Some years ago Dobard and the deceased met with a similar accident. The men were standing together at an emery wheel, when the wheel broke and a piece of it struck Gschwind in the groin, near the spot where he was struck yesterday.
The firm has been in business for a number of years, their specialty being the manufacturing of chains, while they also handle a large amount of new and second-hand machinery. Besides the place where the accident took place the firm have warehouses on St. Peter and Notre Dame streets.
The deceased was 48 years of age, a native of Switzerland, and was well-known and very popular both with the employees and with every one with whom he came in contact. He resided at the corner of Laurel and Walnut streets, and leaves a wife and six children, the eldest a young lady, aged 18 years, to mourn his untimely death.
Deputy Coroner Fenner viewed the body and gave a certificate of death from multiple internal injuries, and the remains were taken in charge by Undertaker Johnson and prepared for burial. ### [6]
