- Obituary posted by PJBrinson on ancestry.com in Bennetts Half Acre family tree Ms. Brinson adds: (I do not have the name of the paper in which this was written but believe it was from Purvis, Mississippi.)
«b»Miss Sallie McKie dies
«/b»At the age of 79 years and following many months of suffering, five of which she was under the constant care of a faithful nurse, Miss Sallie McKie passed to her heavenly reward from the home of R.L. Bennett of this place, Monday night, and her body was laid to rest in the Purvis, Miss. cemetery, following a brief but appropiate service at the grave by the Rev. W. M. Williams, Tuesday afternoon.
Miss McKie had resided in the home of Mr. Bennett for many years, prior to the death of his wife, her niece, and since that event seven years ago had kept house for Mr. Bennett and her nephew, Joseph Allen, to both of whom her devotion and unselfish service had long been matters of community knowledge and admiration. She was a woman of rare intellectual powers and qualified her of keeping abreast of local, national and international affairs. During the late World War she was always concerned for the ultimate outcome of the struggles of demoracy, believing, as she did, that the principal of the Christian religion teaching the law of the Golden Rule would in God's great providence become dominant throughtout the earth. Her admiration for the published ideals of President Wilson were so strong that when he broke down under the weight of his efforts to popularize the proposed league of nations her sympathizes were touched to their depth.
Her memory of person and events far back in the years were most vivid and her ability to marshal strong philosophical statement and strikings metaphor were most marked. She had a keen sense of humor and always appreciated a joke upon herself provided it came from a source believed by her to be honest and sincere.
Sincere belief in every tenet of the Bible distinguished all her expressions of Christian faith. So stong was her belief in prayer that she held to the last the belief that daily prayer for her nephew and protege, Joseph, was the factor which carried him through four years of service afloat in the U.S. Navy and permitted her to live until he was able to return home ad minister to her in her last illness.
As a neighbor she was kind and ever appreciative of the kindness of others. As a Christian she was devout and exemplary, as a ministering member of her home she was unselfish and devoted to those to whom her ministrations were given. Miss McKie had been a teacher and it was with satisfaction that she heard of the success in life of a number of prominent men and women who had received elementary training in the school room under her direction.
Miss McKie was the last of 19 sons and daughters born to Dr. Michael J. and Margaret Williams McKie formerly of Canton, Mississippi all of whom reached the maturity of adult life except her twin sister, Margaret Eugenia.
Among her many nephews and nieces who survive are: Judge William Fly of San Antonio, Tx., Judge R. R. Reid of Amite, La., Mrs. Jame W. Magruder of Baltimore, Md., Mrs. Arthur Mazyck, Miss Eliza McKie of Bennettsville, S.C., C. W. Mosby of Canton, Miss., Miss Golda Allen of Jackson, Tn., Mrs. Hunter Johnson of Fort Worth, Tx., and Mrs. Campbell Sharp of St. Louise, Mo.
