Saint Louis Cemetery #3, New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana, United States

Notes: 3421 Esplanade Avenue, New Orleans, Louisiana
Founded in 1854, St. Louis Cemetery #3 is filled with beautiful statues and imposing tombs. Very clean, well kept, and a favorite of the tour buses.
The front portion of the cemetery is inhabited by many angel statues, the back portion offers solitude. Many family tombs are found along the side that abuts the fairgrounds.
While St. Louis #3 is similar to east coast cemeteries in its planned, wide paths, the architecture reflects its New Orleans surroundings. Tombs of interest include the Thrain gravesite -- "here everyday except Halloween night" -- and the Gallier cenotaph, a memorial to architect James Gallier and his wife who died when the steamer "Evening Star" sank on a trip to New Orleans from New York. The Hellenic Orthodox Community tomb designed by Victor Huber is very striking.
