Notes |
- 19 Nov 2007: A member of the household per the 1880 census is Emma Antione, age 14, who is reported to be a sister-in-law of Auguste Dugas. It is unclear if this is Leontine's sister. On the marriage certificates of her children Augustine and José Octavio, her maiden name appears to be something like Léon. The handwriting is unclear.
Leontine continues to be a woman of mystery. According to research done in the Catholic Archdiocese at Baton Rouge, Leontine appears with the maiden names of Lion or Lyon and Godchaux. In New Orleans, there was for well over a hundred years, a department store called «i»Godchaux's«/i». It was founded by Leon Godchaux, a Jew from Herbeville, France. He began his business as a traveling salesman up and down the Mississippi River from New Orleans to Donaldsonville. He sold all the things the "country folks" would need, since they couldn't get to the city. He stopped to sell goods and supplies and restock his wagon at his temporary store at Convent. One theory is that Leon is the father of Leontine (note the name similarity: Leon and Leon-tine). Many people of color used their father's first names as last names. In this case, Leontine used both. Most likely it seems, Leon had Leontine during one of his many trips through Saint James Parish. [8]
- (Medical):The 1900 census reports that she has borne nine children, all of whom are living.
The 1910 census does not report the total number of children she has borne, but does report that one child is living. [4, 6]

1890 ? [6] |
- The 1900 census indicates they have been married for ten years. But the youngest children (Sam, age 3; Ellie, age 2, and Leontine, age 8 months ) were all baptised with the DUGAS surname. Something is amiss here.
The 1910 census indicates they have been married for 20 years. If something's amiss, at least it's consistent! [6]
